We've learned from a couple of videos that Blizzard have plans to create horses that can be customized for Diablo 4. I'm a fan of this concept since the game is set be an open world and in order to class balance in their abilities to travel across the map, the speed of their movement or ability to dash will no longer be as crucial. Instead, everyone is riding horses that equalize the out of combat capability for all classes to travel the map.
In Diablo 3, certain classes felt as if they were left in rifts, because their movements were not as effective - or they were too expensive to maintain or their cooldowns were long, whatever it may resulted in was that there was a lot of mismatching in public lobby areas.
Here's a quote from a newspaper article about horses and Diablo. I can incorporate into my ideas:
"Players are able to change their the saddle, armour pieces and hanging trophy on the back of the horse, like monster heads and, of course the type of mount. The mounts included demon horses with flames and skeletal ghost horses and much more."
We have four different options to customize the horses of Diablo 4. We have the armor pieces as well as the saddle, the trophy and The mount. In the interest of simplicity, I'm going with the assumption that "armor pieces" aren't intended to be plural. I'm going to assume that it's simply a single slot.
The concept of armor is fairly straightforward I'm guessing it'll offer an armor stat that is comparable that of a horse (how much damage it can sustain before the user is dismounted) Stats like moving speed, or perhaps stats like the amount of damages the "dismount" ability can cause with, or perhaps some stats that provide you with protection or a damage resistance boosts briefly when you dismount. And then there are famous horse-themed armors which can be used to do all sorts of unusual things.
Regarding saddles, I'm thinking this could be a type of non-combat utility slot for example, allowing horses to move through enemies in a phase or projectiles, or provide mobility speed for certain kinds of terrain like Brimstone or water for instance. This will allow for different ways of fighting or running from them.
The trophy I believe should be best used for pure cosmetic skin alteration like the case where you receive an award by a mummy who is undead, it will alter your horse's skin to one of an undead in stead. They are a great way to display to others players your hard-earned grind by obtaining rare drops from tough enemies.
Finally, the horse itself I believe that it is best understood as an object with distinct stats of its own that include health and armor, as well as speed of movement dismount damage and turn rate/handling and more. I would also prefer to see an element of a horse breeding mechanic into the game, where players can play and try to achieve the best result and it could add an additional dimension to the game, as well as an alternative sport to participate in, which could provide a respite of the die-cutting and cutting and slashing that the game is primarily focused on.
Because we're only getting 10 item slots instead thirteen (16 including cube) this time the 4 horse slots will be crucial capabilities to make up for the lack in personal customization based on class.
